SF Gate reported that California Department of Public Health announced on Friday it would make permanent the temporary ban placed by state government against hemp-derived THC.
Gavin Newsom (D), governor of the state, led by lawmakers in September last year. Gavin Newsom’s (D) emergency regulations containing the ban were approved by state legislators in September. Newsom, in March of this year, extended the temporary ban by another six month. Current policy expires in September.
A 45-day period of public comments will now be held on the permanent ban proposal by CDPH. An audience is scheduled for next month, to gather input from members of the public.
Newsom argued for the ban in 2017, arguing that hemp THC products undermine the highly-regulated state cannabis industry. This, in turn, undercuts state-licensed cannabis companies. Before the ban, individuals could purchase THC-infused gummies, beverages, and other products from ordinary retailers including gas stations and convenience stores — additionally, the products were largely untested for pesticides, additives, and other contaminants.
In a statement released last month, the Governor’s Office said that businesses visited in the state were in compliance with the hemp product ban to a rate of 99.7%.
California licensed cannabis sales also experienced a 11% drop in sales during the first three months of this year as compared to previous years. This was the biggest decline in cannabis sales ever recorded in California.
