Iowa lawmaker supporting medical psilocybin slams bill that would’ve legalized only a synthetic version of the psychedelic

Shipley stated that he “condemns Compass Pathways” for their approach in creating and patenting a synthetic form of “natural psilocybin, which God gave us and that we all know and love.”

A lawmaker from Iowa who was a proponent of the bill that would have created a program in Iowa allowing the use of psilocybin for medicinal purposes said Governor. Kim Reynolds’ (R), decision to veto legislation relating to the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushroom was “a great decision.”

Rep. Jeff Shipley said the state, rather than prioritizing a synthetic version of psilocybin to be rescheduled as a controlled substance, should focus instead on creating a legal program that allows the natural occurrence of psilocybin in psychiatric treatment.

House File 383 allowed the immediate prescription and distribution after federal approval. It was a bill similar to one that had been signed into law in Colorado.

The bill was about crystalline polymorph Psilocybin. It is also known as COMP360. COMP360 has been developed by Compass Pathways Biotechnology to aid patients in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, anorexia, and resistant depression.

Shipley condemned Compass Pathways for creating and patenting synthetic versions of the natural psilocybin God created and everyone loves.

Compass Pathways has declined to make any comment regarding the veto and Shipley’s statement.

Shipley also apologized via email for his support of the bill which had been passed by the House as well as the Senate unanimously.

Shipley stated that the proper legal framework would be to move psilocybin from schedule I to IV or III and to allow state regulatory boards in each jurisdiction to offer it as a medicine.

Reynolds explained her veto by saying that before the state legalized the drug at the federal level, it should be given time to study any action taken on the federal side.

Shipley, a strong supporter of House File 978 that would have allowed the use of psilocybin in psychiatric treatments through a government program. The program proposed would have worked similarly to that of the medical cannabis program in California.

This bill was passed by the House in late April with a large majority, but not the Senate.

“It’s my hope and prayer that the Governor’s office and the Iowa Senate will agree to take up…HF978 as an immediate priority next January,” Shipley said.
