Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced on Juneteenth that he will pardon nearly 7,000 individuals convicted for cannabis offenses in Maryland.
This move comes after the Governor pardoned over 175,000 cannabis convictions from the past last year. The pardon affected about 100,000 people and was the biggest cannabis pardoning action ever taken by a governor.
Moore also announced the allocation of $400 million to Maryland’s historically underserved neighborhoods in order to raise their home values and encourage home ownership.
Shore News Network reported that the governor announced an investment of $1,34 billion for historically Black colleges and universities, as well as $816 millions in contracts with Black businesses.
Governor’s pardons do not remove or conceal past convictions, but they forgive them. However, in April last year Gov. Moore enacted a law that required the state to shield all criminal records associated low-level convictions of cannabis in the State from the public’s view.
Maryland launched its adult-use marijuana market in 2023, following a law signed by Governor Hogan and a bill passed by the Maryland Legislature earlier that same year. Moore.
