Massachusetts Marijuana Milestone: Adult-Use Marijuana Sales Exceed $8 Billion since Market Launch

Massachusetts has announced that the recreational marijuana market in Massachusetts now exceeds $8 billion dollars.

According to the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission’s (CCC) Tuesday release of data, only seven months had passed since marijuana sales in the state reached $7.6 billion. By the end June, they added another $1 billion.

Since legalization in 2018, $8.033 billion has been spent on cannabis products for adults.

The CCC’s Executive Director Travis Ahern commented in a CCC press release that “the Commission is pleased to see the Commonwealth reaching another milestone for adult-use cannabis sale, which shows the consumers have continued to place their trust in the safety and the security of regulated markets.”

The regulators are “looking forward” to the economic growth of Massachusetts as they prepare for the launch “of social consumption lounges in the next months.” CCC announced last month that they planned to complete the rules for this new type of license by October.

Cannabis flower, based on the product types, has remained to be the top choice for adults in 2025. It accounted for $338 millions from January 1, 2018 to July 6, 2018. Vape products (169 million dollars) and pre-rolls (116 million dollars) were the next most popular options for adult consumers in 2025.

Massachusetts has now sold medical marijuana for $1.4 billion since 2018.

Combined medical and adult-use marijuana sales first surpassed $7 billion back in March 2024.

Separately, in May CCC launched an online platform aimed at helping people find jobs, workplace training and networking opportunities in the state’s legal cannabis industry.

State lawmakers have also been considering setting tighter restrictions on intoxicating hemp-derived products and a plan to allow individual entities to control a larger number of cannabis establishments.

In Massachusetts as well, lawmakers who were negotiating a budget for the state clashed with CCC officials who said that they couldn’t improve technology without additional funding from legislators.

Texas lawmakers consider new hemp bills for special session, including a ban on products with any amount of THC.
