Minnesota Dispensaries launch adult-use sales under state program

The sale of cannabis for adult use will begin in several Minnesota retailers on Sept. 16, and 17. This marks 840 days after Gov. Tim Walz has signed legislation that legalizes a commercial market for people over 21.

It took Vermont 1,741-days to launch a commercial cannabis market. Maine, who had legalized possession for adult use and home cultivation in April 2020, is yet to pass legislation providing a framework legalizing businesses.

Minnesota’s Office of Cannabis Management has been working for two and a half years to create a licensed cannabis industry that will provide access to products tested, taxed and regulated statewide.

This week the OCM’s work has become a reality.

Vireo Growth Inc. reported that its Green Goods Dispensary, located downtown Minneapolis, recorded the first sale of cannabis for adult use on 16 September. All eight retail outlets of the company are now selling both adult-use and medical cannabis.

Green Thumb Industries has announced it will start adult-use cannabis sales on September 17th at 9:00 a.m. at its five RISE dispensaries located in Brooklyn Park Eagan Mankato New Hope Willmar.

Green Thumb is a multistate company with 20 manufacturing plants and 108 dispensaries in 14 different states. In Minnesota, the company will donate a percentage of first-day profits from adult use to non-profit organizations such as Metro Meals on Wheels and Balanced Veterans Network.

Green Thumb, with its manufacturing plant in Cottage Grove, has been serving Minnesota’s medical marijuana market since 2021.

In a recent press release, Green Thumb’s President Anthony Georgiadis stated that they were “excited to celebrate the historic launch of cannabis for adult use in Minnesota.” Our team looks forward to introducing Minnesotans with our leading brands including RYTHM Beboe Dogwalkers and more to the industry. We will continue to give medical patients the service and trust they deserve from RISE including curbside pickup and priority parking in select locations.

Missouri is a state with approximately 6.2 million residents. It launched its adult use sales program at the beginning of 2023. The first year, Missouri reported over $1 billion of sales. Missouri, which is geographically bordered by six states with no legalized adult-use marketplaces, reported more than $1 billion in sales during its first year of operation.
