According to The Nebraska Examiner, Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers called this week on lawmakers in the state to reject legislation that would implement medical marijuana regulations. This was approved last year by more than two thirds of voters.
Hilger said that, at a media conference held on Wednesday in the presence of multiple sheriffs and prosecutors, regulating the industry for medical cannabis would “boost the black market”, and help to fuel reforms concerning recreational cannabis.
This isn’t about the will or the people. Nebraska will become less safe and more dangerous. This is going to make Nebraska less safe, more dangerous. — Hilgers, via the Examiner
The proposal in question — Legislative Bill 677, introduced by state Sen. Ben Hansen (R) — was initially rejected by the General Affairs Committee last month. Two weeks later, the committee re-examined the bill with new modifications, such as new regulations and details for the Medical Cannabis Commission. It then advanced the proposal to the entire floor of the chamber for consideration.
Hansen stated that after Hilgers’ comments, the attorney general “turned a blind-eye” on the measure passed by voters.
The medical marijuana legalization initiative, which was passed last year by the voters, allows patients to access the program if they are in good health and have the recommendation of a qualified doctor.
