The campaign seeking to legalize adult-use cannabis in Oklahoma is set to begin collecting petition signatures for its proposal next month, KOSU reports. Oklahomans for Responsible Cannabis Action filed their constitutional amendment in April to legalize marijuana for adults aged 21 and older. The group needs to collect 172,993 signatures valid from Oklahoma registered voters before the issue can be placed on the ballot.
ORCA Director Jed Green told KOSU that the group is encouraged by the number of medical cannabis patient ID holders in the state, which totals about 330,000, for the signature gathering portion of the effort.
The last two months we’ve spent communicating with the industry and the community in Oklahoma. We expect to have at least a small majority of Oklahoma county representatives when the project begins August 6.” — Green to KOSU
The amendment, if approved by the voters, would also remove the current state excise taxes on adult-use cannabis and medical cannabis products. Under the proposed proposal, adult-use marijuana sales will be subject to a 10% tax.
Oklahoma voters rejected the ballot question legalizing adult-use marijuana by 63% to 38 % during a special 2023 election. New proposals include safeguards for Oklahoma’s medical marijuana program, prohibitions on the use THC metabolite test to determine illegal violations and protections of employees, parents and firearm owners.
This proposal allows for the home cultivation of marijuana and would also allow existing medical cannabis operators access to enter adult-use cannabis market.
