Poll: 96% Cannabis Consumers Do Not Trust DEA in the Rescheduling Debate – MEDCAN24

It appears that the US public, two weeks on from the suspension of groundbreaking proceedings for cannabis rescheduling, believes this was the right decision.

According to a recent poll conducted by NuggMD between January 16 and January 19, 2025, only 4% of respondents trust the DEA to act as an ‘unbiased proponent’ for cannabis rescheduling efforts, while a staggering 96% expressed distrust.

The survey, which asked 677 cannabis users from NuggMD’s pool of opt-in respondents, is likely biased. However, the results show a disconnect between the DEA, and a demographic that directly impacts federal cannabis policies.

This survey reflects broader tensions that exist in the ongoing debate about cannabis, as the DEA was perceived by the public to be unwilling to change despite a shift of opinion dramatically towards legalization.

Last week, cannabis rescheduling suffered a serious blow when it became known that Derek S. Maltz, a longtime anti-drug activist and longtime cannabis skeptic was appointed acting administrator at the DEA.

Just days after the rescheduling hearings were placed indefinitely on hold amid allegations that the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) was actively working to undermine the process, the administration confirmed that Maltz will act as ‘interim administrator’ from January 21, 2025.

Rescheduling now depends more than ever before on the views and actions of the incoming leadership at the DEA. The judge has criticized the DEA’s behaviour throughout the process.

In Trump’s America there is little certainty, but signs suggest that Republicans are softening their rhetoric on cannabis reform.

Fox News in particular, which is considered by many to be the voice of the US Right, began airing cannabis content.

As per The Dales ReportThe network aired an opinion piece by Weldon Angleos and Mike Tyson, criticizing the Biden Administration’s marijuana policies. They also highlighted recent industry development, such as Trulieve’s partnership with Champ Baily in Georgia.

Todd Harrison, well-known cannabis reform advocate, spoke on Fox Business, with Charles Payne, about the sector’s opportunities and challenges. Harrison’s participation on such a conservative platform is an important step in normalizing cannabis-related conversations and gaining industry support.

The sample is biased as well, but the fact that 677 respondents from NuggMD’s respondent pool voluntarily volunteered to participate in the survey highlights a major disconnect between DEA policy and a critical demographic.

The DEA was perceived by the public as being resistant to change, despite the fact that the opinion of the general population has shifted dramatically towards legalization.
