Texas House Votes on Expanding Medical Cannabis Program

Texas Tribune reported that the Texas House of Representatives approved a bill on Tuesday to allow new prescription products and to include new conditions in the medical cannabis program.

House Bill 46 introduced by State Rep. Ken King, (R) would include chronic pain and Crohn’s disease on the list of conditions that qualify. Report said that the proposal also would give patients new access to products, including patches, topicals suppositories and inhalers prescribed by doctors, as well as some vaping device.

Texas lawmakers established the Texas Compassionate Usage Program in 2015. The program allows state-registered medical marijuana patients to access low-dose products. The Texas Compassionate Use Program was originally designed to help epilepsy and other patients with chronic conditions. However, over the years, the lawmakers have extended the program’s coverage.

Meanwhile, Texas lawmakers are in a showdown over intoxicating hemp products in the state: the Senate passed an outright ban last month on products containing any amount of THC, but the bill was recently amended by a House committee to regulate — not gut — the retail hemp market.
