Virginia Gov. The Virginia Governor Vetoes a Bill that Improves Medical Cannabis Labeling

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) last week vetoed Legislation This would have codified the locations where medical cannabis can be delivered and improved the labeling of products.  

The author, in his own words: Veto messageYoungkin, while applauding the new labeling, said the provisions for delivery raised “public and regulatory concerns”, despite that the state had already allowed the delivery medical cannabis products. 

“Permitting deliveries to businesses – including locations where substance abuse, gambling, or other high-risk activities may occur – creates unnecessary risks for diversion, theft, and unintended access by minors. The current regulations allow for the safe and tightly controlled delivery of medical marijuana to your home. The framework provides access to patients, while keeping strong safeguards in place to prevent abuse. — Youngkin in the veto message

“Anyone who can read can see that this bill enumerated multiple prohibitions on delivery locations which do not currently exist under Virginia law,” Pedini said. 

Youngkin has vetoed three bills this legislative session that have dealt with cannabis policies in California. The veto is Youngkin’s third this legislative session related to cannabis policy in the state. FebruaryThe Governor vetoed both a law that established regulations to create an adult use cannabis industry within the State and a law protecting the parental rights for adults who consume or possess cannabis legally in accordance to state laws.
