[PRESS RELEASE] – AUSTIN, Texas, July 22, 2025 – Texas Hemp Business Council issued the statement below regarding introduction of Senate Bill 5 at a special session during the 89th Texas Legislature.
“Some Texas legislators are once again disregarding the facts, public opinion and the Governor.

“Despite the Governor’s veto on S.B. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Senator Charles Perry have pushed S.B. 5 is a dangerous repetition that will ban hemp products which are federally legal, destroy small businesses, and criminalize consumers who act responsibly, all on the pretext of safety.

“Governor Abbott made the right decision: Hemp is bad for Texas and bad policy. He protected A $5.5 billion state industry This industry supports more than 50,000 jobs, and generates an annual tax revenue of $268,000,000.
“Texans are speaking loudly. The message from 150,000 signatures on petitions, 8,000 letters written by hand, and three polls across the state is clear: Prohibition does not work. What Texans really want is responsible, smart regulation.

The THBC is a strong supporter of H.B. 4242, Alternatives that are common sense include age limitations of 21+ years, child resistant packaging and space set backs from school. “It’s the best path for the public, the economy and hemp in Texas.
