Hemp-based insecticides are no match for darkling beetles

The darkling beetle, which is the adult version of mealworms in the chicken industry, has a devastating effect on it. Pesticides based on hemp may be a good way to control them.

Shirley Chao is a biology professor from Fayetteville State University, North Carolina. She has spent countless hours researching pesticides with fewer side effects that are more effective at destroying specific pests without harming other animals and the environment. A student experiment from a few years ago involved selecting an insect to determine the optimal formulation of feed. The results were unexpected.

One student chose to feed hemp. While the insects appeared to thrive on a hemp diet, they never fully developed into adults or were deformed and died — and the connection was made. Dr. Chao’s team conducted research on the subject and created a few hemp-based insecticides.

The darkling beetle is a target, as it has an impact on poultry production in the USA. The beetles are attracted by feed — they not only eat and contaminate it, but infest the birds as well and can transmit disease. The current conventional pesticides used on poultry are dangerous, especially because the darkling beetles like by birds.

Hemp-derived pesticides from Dr. Chao work against beetles, without causing harm to poultry. They also kill flies, cocci, and other insects.

The project of Dr. Chao was funded in May, this year. NCInnovation programaccording to Spectrum NewsChao and team have begun building a breeding house as well as a broiler house (meat chickens) in rural North Carolina for field tests of their insecticides. If those tests were successful, formulas would be subjected to toxicity testing in order to register with the EPA.

“We are looking to partner with North Carolina businesses to bring our product to market.” said Dr. Chao Early this year,

It is important to note that the word “you” means “you”. North Carolina Poultry Federation According to reports, the top commodity of the state is chicken. This industry contributes over USD $39.7billion in revenue and supports nearly 150,000 new jobs. More than 900,000,000 broilers are produced in the state, which is ranked 9th nationally for egg production.

Industrial hemp can be used to make pesticides, just as one example.
