Australia’s Office of Drug Control has released data for 2024 on import and exported cannabis products.

It also regulates, monitors, and controls the importation, exportation, and manufacturing of controlled substances in order to meet Australia’s international drug convention obligations, which includes cannabis used for medical purposes.

Updated data shows that the amount of cannabis produced by Australia in Australia was 41.328 kilograms, up from 26.593 kilograms in 2010.

However, cannabis was imported in greater quantities under the 1956 Prohibited Imports Regulations (PI Regulations). This increased from 44,573 kilograms of 2023 to 77.406 kilograms 2024. Canada was the country with the highest exports into Australia. The import of Canadian cannabis to Australia increased from 35,941 kilograms to 62.111 kg in 2024.

According to Prohibition Partners’ Global Cannabis Report: 5th Edition released early this year, Canadian imports have been a thorn in the side of Australia cultivators/producers who claim:

“… that they are competitively disadvantaged as importers are using a loophole in which lower quality and lower cost products, imported from Canada, are being dumped in the market through GMP-compliant packaging facilities.”

South Africa (4.992 kilograms) was the second largest exporter of cannabis in Australia (2024), followed by Czechia (2.400 kilograms) then Denmark (2.110 kilograms). Czechia exported the most cannabis to Australia in 2024, after 2022 and 2013 saw no imports.

The export figures for Australia also increased, from 2023’s 2,066 kilograms to 3,312 kilograms by 2024.
