Natural Medicine Alliance of Idaho continues to push for a medical cannabis ballot item on Idaho’s state ballot 2026.
Idaho, the only remaining US state without a medical marijuana law and the last U.S. State to allow hemp production, is the only one that has not legalized any form of cannabis.
Natural Medicine Alliance wants to make sure that this distinction does not happen when it comes to medical cannabis. According to the Idaho Medical Cannabis Act it will create a highly regulated, safe medical program that allows Idahoans who have a valid healthcare diagnosis access to treatments.
More than 70,000 valid signatures from registered voters in the entire state are required to place the question on the ballot for 2026. In recent years, there have been several attempts to put the issue on a ballot.
Kind Idaho is joining the campaign. It had filed a petition to put its decriminalisation of cannabis initiative on ballots next year.
“In the spirit of cooperation to ensure that we have a pro-cannabis measure on the ballot in 2026, we will not be circulating the #DecriminalizeCannabisNow Petition until they have collected their 70,000 signatures. We will support the signature-gatherers up until then.” said the group.
Idaho, like many US States, has battled an opioid epidemic. Evidence is mounting that the legal availability of cannabis has a direct correlation to reducing opioid prescriptions. A recent study, for example reported that the opening of medical cannabis dispensaries was associated with significant decreases in opioid outcomes.
Natural Medicine Alliance states that “In Idaho every year, almost 836,000 prescriptions for opioids are written in a small state with less than two million residents.” This is 44 prescriptions of opiates per 100 people. Patients with cancer, PTSD or epilepsy as well as chronic pain and other illnesses still have no access to non-addictive, safe and natural medical treatment.

The Idaho Statesman commissioned a poll in 2022 that found 68% of Idahoans support legalizing medical cannabis.
