Cannabis products can appear to be premium in a dispensary but their certificate of analyses may tell a completely different story. A lab report is not just a marketing brochure. It’s also called a certificate or COA. This is the record of what a laboratory found using a specific method and a certain date in a sample from a batch. That distinction matters. It is important to note that a high THC count does not guarantee freshness, safety or medical suitability.
Then, start with the date, batch and laboratory.
Check the report to make sure it can be matched with the product before you start looking for cannabinoids. The COA must match the packaging. The report must include the type of sample – edible, flower, extract or vape cartridges – along with the date, as well as the date it was tested.
Traceability is of particular importance for medical products. A COA that only mentions the cultivar, but not the lot, provides limited assurance. It may be possible to get a result for a test sample taken many months prior to sale, but volatile compounds like terpenes are susceptible of changing during storage. Cannabis flower can also lose moisture over time. This can have an impact on potency expressed as a percent by weight.
The best reports include the method used, and whether or not results apply to dry mass, weight as received, or liquid volume. A common mistake is to compare the dried flower results with oil results without checking units.
How to interpret cannabis laboratory reports for potency
Cannabinoid levels are typically expressed in percentages for flowers and milligrams per millilitre, unit or gram for manufactured products. For flower, 1 % by weight roughly equates to about 10 milligrams in a gram. A flower with a 20% THC label contains 200 mg THC per 100 grams in lab terms.
It is important to put this figure in context. The majority of laboratories report both neutralized and acidic cannabinoids. In raw flower, THCA dominates, not delta-9THC. Heat converts THCA in THC via decarboxylation. However, the conversion isn’t one-to-one.
Calculations that are commonly used include:
Total THC = delta-9 THC + (THCA × 0.877)
CBDA and CBD are also subject to the same principles. If a label lists 1% delta-9-THC and 22% THCA then the total THC would be around 20.3% not 23%. The label will likely overstate THC availability if it simply adds these two figures.
The total cannabinoid level is not the only thing that patients and physicians should consider. A flower with 20% THC may not be appropriate for those who are THC-naive or need a medicine to treat anxiety. While a product with a significant CBD content and a lower THC level may provide a risk-benefit profile that is different, one with a lower THC level but a meaningful CBD concentration could offer a completely different benefit. The selection of products should be guided by clinical advice when cannabis is being used for medicinal purposes.
Commercially, potency variation is also important. A modest difference between the label claim and the laboratory result can be acceptable in regulated supply chains. Large differences raise more serious questions about sampling, homogenisation, packaging, storage or labelling controls.
Potency and dose are not the same thing
A COA does not describe the dosage a person is likely to take. Dosage depends on what amount is consumed, how it’s administered, tolerance, and in the case of oral products digestion and metabolic rate. Inhaled and ingested cannabis cannot be compared milligram-for-milligram as if they deliver identical effects.
It is for this reason that “highest THC level” is not a reliable rule of thumb. This may be a good way to satisfy a specific recreational preference but is not an accurate shorthand for quality or consumer safety.
Terpenes, useful data but with limited promises
Terpene panels can be used to identify batches and aromas. Commonly, myrcene is listed alongside limonene. The combined percentage of these compounds is usually lower than that of cannabinoids. However, they are still important to commercial consistency and cultivar characteristics.
Evidence for terpene effects on humans is less conclusive than what cannabis marketing would have you believe. The so-called “entourage effect” is not a definitive answer to whether a terpene named will have a particular medical or mood outcome.
You can read terpene information as a descriptive chemistry. A report that shows a clear and repeatable terpene profiles can be used to support confidence when handling batches. This report cannot prove that the product will relieve pain, improve sleep or provide a certain experience.
Quality control begins with contamination screens
The safety test can have a greater impact on the market for adult-use cannabis and medical cannabis that is regulated. The specific panel depends on the product and jurisdiction, but can include pesticides or heavy metals. It may also test for mycotoxins, residual solvants, foreign material, moisture, or water activity.
A result marked with “ND”, means that no compound was detected over the detection threshold set by the laboratory. The compound may not be present at all conceivable traces. It is for this reason that the limits of detection or LOD and limits of quantification or LOQ are so important. Under the LOQ a lab may be able detect a sign but not measure it accurately enough to give a precise number.
The main question is whether the detected contamination exceeds any applicable legal or internal specification limits. These limits aren’t universal. European medical frameworks and national pharmacopoeial standards, as well as adult-use regulations can be very different. COAs should be evaluated against the standards governing the specific market rather than against an online generic checklist.
Microbiology deserves particular care. Reports can be screened for total yeast, mould, aerobic microbial numbers, bile tolerant gram-negative bacterium, or specific pathogens, such as Salmonella, E. coli, and E. coli. Immunocompromised individuals should not substitute a “passing” result for medical advice. However, testing is an important risk-control tool.
Residual solvent testing is equally important for extracts and vape goods. Solvents may be used to extract legitimately, but verification and limits on residue are crucial. A report that only tests the flower does not validate cartridges made from this flower.
You can read the numbers in their uncertainty
The laboratory analysis is highly complex, but not infallible. The results can be affected by the amount of sampled material, natural variations within an industrial plant, transportation conditions, sample preparation, and analytical methods. One sample is supposed to represent an entire batch. Therefore, the sampling protocol is as important as instrument reading.
If a measurement uncertainty is given, look for it. When a test shows a total THC of 21%, but there is an uncertainty range for the result, it would be misleading to take 21,0% as a fact that can never change. The number should be viewed as an estimate within the confines of a lab framework.
This has direct consequences for businesses in terms of procurement and claims. If you build your marketing strategy around a batch with an unusually high COA, it can put you at risk for regulatory or reputational issues if the subsequent batches have lower results. Most mature operators use clear specifications, batch ranges and ongoing third party verification instead of cherry-picking their results.
Warning signs displayed on the COA of cannabis
It is not necessary for a report to be visually complex to be credible. However, it must be legible and precise. When a document makes broad safety claims, but has no batch identification, no testing dates, no lab details, no units or no cannabinoid panels, be cautious.
A COA can be forged or selectively presented. A COA is easily forged, or selectively displayed. A direct verification with the laboratory is appropriate when a high-value purchase decision or patient safety are at stake.
The report is not a verdict, but evidence
Cannabis testing has become a standard expectation. European regulation COAs are not a substitute for a comprehensive quality assessment. Packaging integrity and storage conditions are important, as is the manufacturer’s reputation, regulatory status, clinical suitability, and the manufacturer’s reputation.
The products with the highest number of THC are not necessarily the most reliable. These are the products whose batch data and safety controls as well as label claims can be examined by the average consumer. This is a standard that the cannabis industry will be increasingly expected to meet.
