The Chicago Tribune reports that Illinois officials are proposing to change the state’s cannabis growing rules, reversing a major policy shift and allowing outdoor cultivation.
Under the proposed rule change, outdoor cannabis flower would only be allowed to be used for extraction purposes — cannabis flower products would remain indoor-only.
In the past, the Illinois Department of Agriculture claimed that state law required cannabis to be grown inside a “locked, enclosed” facility. This meant outdoor cultivation was prohibited. After multiple legal challenges, the Illinois Department of Agriculture is now changing its position.
The new rule allows licensed operators to grow outdoors, but they must be separated with a chain link fence and other security measures.
Scott Redman is the founder of the Illinois Independent Craft Growers Association. He told the Tribune this change would be “a game changer” for small farmers.
“For those in operation, it provides a faster and cheaper route to expand up to the state limit of” 14,000-square foot canopy. For the projects still in design, it can mean that one need not spend millions on lighting and HVAC (heating, ventilation and cooling) if it is outside the budget … This is a significant step forward for the industry as far as I am concerned.” — Redman, via the Tribune
Only registered medical marijuana patients in Illinois can grow cannabis at home.
