WBIR 10 reported that Tennessee House Republicans had passed a measure to ban intoxicating products made from hemp in the State.
Rep. William Lamberth, R. sponsored HB 1376 which would restrict the THC content of consumable hemp to 0.3%. Lamberth stated that the hemp products available in Tennessee were “extremely addictive” and added, “what we choose to do with them can make a difference in people’s lives.”
They should be sold and regulated the same way as wine, beer and liquor, recognizing their great danger. — Lamberth, via WBIR 10 News
The Alcohol Beverage Commission would take over the regulation of consumable hemp product from the Department of Agriculture.
However, business owners say that this legislation will destroy the state’s industrial hemp sector, drive away tax revenue and cause ruin to many farmers and entrepreneurs.
Travis McKinney, owner of BLOM Shop in WBIR 10 News said: “It’s not just small businesses that will go out of business. Hundreds of farmers who rely on hemp are also going to be put out of their jobs.” When it was legalized, I could see how it helped people, no matter if they were close friends or strangers.
SB 1413 (the Senate’s counterpart bill) has passed through several committees, and will be considered on the Senate Floor later this week.
