Alabama Gov. The Alabama Reflector reported that Kay Ivey, a Republican governor of Alabama, signed into law on Wednesday a bill to regulate hemp-based products for consumption.
Andy Whitt’s (R) bill HB445 sets forth new labeling and testing requirements for edible hemp products. It also bans smokable THC-containing products including vaporizers. The maximum THC content for edible products will be 10 mg per product, per wrapper, and 40 mg per package. A 10% excise duty will also be levied on hemp-based products. The state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (ABC) Board is responsible for licensing hemp businesses. The only companies that will be allowed retail sales of consumable hemp are licensed ones.
Whitt said to WSFA 12 News the proposal doesn’t legalize marijuana but does ban hemp-based products. Whitt added that you’ll still be able buy gummies that help with arthritis, anxiety or sleep.
The hemp industry in Alabama has vociferously opposed this proposal, and have called for the Governor to exercise her veto power to protect their businesses and livelihoods.

Alabama Policy Institute (a conservative think tank) also opposed this policy but said it did not go far enough to control the hemp industry.
