Texas Lawmakers Ban THC

CBS News reported that the Texas House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 3 on Wednesday. The proposal seeks to prohibit products with any level of THC content, including those derived from industrial hemp plants, which are federally legal. The state’s medical cannabis program is exempt from the ban.

SB3, a bill drafted by Charles Perry, and approved in March by the Senate, was passed 95-44. If signed into law, the bill would prohibit the sale of any products containing delta-8 or delta-9 THC — or any other cannabinoids, except CBD or CBG — effectively shuttering the state’s $8 billion retail hemp products industry.

We are disappointed with the Texas House of Representatives’ passage. [SB3]”A bill which dismantles legal hemp and disregards the voices and livelihoods of farmers, small business owners, veterans, and consumers in all parts of Texas who depend on hemp-derived goods for their well-being and livelihoods.” — The Texas Hemp Business Council, in a statement

Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick (R), a former Texas Lt. Gov. who declared last year that he would ban THC completely by 2025 as one of his highest priorities, has thanked the lawmakers for passing this bill.

House members prefaced their THC crackdown last week with a decision to add chronic pain and Crohn’s disease to the list of conditions that qualify for the limited medical marijuana program in the state.
