Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) of Michigan is proposing to include cannabis products in her plan to raise infrastructure funds, according to The Detroit News. Her proposal could generate $470 million which could go toward road and bridge repair throughout Michigan.
Whitmer’s team announced in their report that Whitmer’s plan aims to “close a loophole that exempted marijuana industry from wholesale tax,” yet failed to describe exactly how this plan will function.
Michigan currently levies a wholesale tax rate of 32% on tobacco products and retail cannabis sales are taxed at 10% according to state law. Voters legalized adult use cannabis use last year with retail sales taxed at 10% under Michigan Cannabis Industry Association executive director Robin Schneider telling Detroit News any changes would need a three-fourths majority vote of lawmakers; otherwise Michigan would become home of one of the highest cannabis tax rates nationally if approved.
