Report: Trump Told Private Donors He Is Considering Rescheduling Cannabis – MEDCAN24

According to the Wall Street Journal, President Donald Trump said that during a private dinner fundraiser held at his club in Bedminster (New Jersey), he would consider loosening federal restrictions on cannabis.

After months of apathy, the Trump second administration has finally shown that its commitment to federal cannabis laws, made during the drug war era, is still alive.

CNN was told by two people who were at the $1,000 per plate fundraiser that, when the president was asked about loosening cannabis laws in the US, he replied, “We have to take a look.” We’re definitely going to take a look at that.

Currently, a majority of Americans reside in states that allow some access to marijuana, however, the substance remains a Schedule I drug under federal Controlled Substances Act. The top of federal drug schedules is meant to be for substances with “no currently accepted medical purpose and high potential for addiction.”

Despite the large majority of Americans residing in jurisdictions that allow some access to cannabis under certain conditions, this plant is still a Schedule I substance according to the federal Controlled Substances Act.

Informally announced by Joe Biden (D), former president of the United States, in May last year, the decision to reschedule marijuana from Schedule I into Schedule III stalled out when DEA administrative law judge John Mulrooney who had been tasked to oversee the hearings decided to allow the incoming Administration to decide whether or not to re-start the process. The judge retired recently, but the decision is now in the hands of Terrance Cole, the new DEA administrator.

Cole said during his confirmation hearings to senators that the cannabis schedule would be a top priority for him if he was confirmed. However, he did not mention this process in his initial list of the eight most important priorities when he took over the Agency.
