Republican lawmakers kill cannabis legalization provisions of Wisconsin governor’s proposed budget

The Associated Press has reported that Republican Wisconsin lawmakers have killed provisions within the proposed Wisconsin state budget, which would’ve established a regulated cannabis program for adult use. This is the third instance in as many months that Republican legislators have thrown out legalization goals in Democratic Governor. Tony Evers’ spending proposal.

The aforementioned is a Press ReleaseEvers’ office claimed that reforms will “allow Wisconsin to compete against other states in attracting talented workers” and provide more resources for the state to spend on critical priorities. They cited a Marquette University report from February 2024. You can also check out our poll The Wisconsin voter survey found that 60% supported the reforms.

Governor’s Budgets Estimated adult-use marijuana legalization will result in $58.1 millions in revenue for fiscal year 2026-2027, “and increasing amounts in future” years. It would also “create a procedure for those serving prison sentences or previously convicted for marijuana-related offenses to be able to reduce or repeal their sentences for minor nonviolent crimes.”

In the proposal, a wholesale tax of 15% and a retail tax of 10% would be imposed on cannabis products for adult use.

Wisconsin is bordered by Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota – which have legalized cannabis for adult-use – and by Iowa, which has not legalized cannabis for any purpose. Cannabis use by adults and for medical purposes is still illegal in Washington.
