Texas releases rules for expanding medical cannabis dispensary licenses – MEDCAN24

Marijuana Moment has reported that Texas Department of Public Safety, or DPS, posted draft regulations to increase the number of licensed medical cannabis dispensaries within the state. This is in accordance with legislation signed in June.

A 30-day period of public comments has been opened for the proposed regulations, published on Friday by The Texas Register.

While the rules’ most significant change would be adding twelve new dispensary licenses — currently, there are just three — the rules also seek to specify state officials’ licensing powers, especially when it comes to revoking licenses. According to the report, only 139 people who applied during an earlier application window of 2023 will have access to the first licensing round.

The governor signed the proposal. Greg Abbott’s (R) proposal also includes the addition of chronic pain and Crohn’s to the list.

Texas lawmakers have been working in an extra legislative session, while officials implement medical cannabis’ recent expansions. They are also bringing down hemp-derived THC. Last week the Senate passed legislation that banned hemp THC outright. The governor had vetoed a similar bill in June.
