California Assembly Votes Unimally to Block Cannabis Tax Hike — MEDCAN24

CBS News has reported that California Assembly members voted 74-0 on Monday in favor of a measure blocking the implementation on July 1st, a 25% tax on California’s cannabis-legal industry. The bill (AB564) will be considered by the Senate.

Assemblymember Matt Haney’s (D) proposal came after he noted, “If we keep adding more taxes and charges to our struggling small marijuana businesses in California, the cannabis culture will be seriously threatened.”

“Adding more costs is not a good idea if we are to continue to support the cannabis industry, which brings millions of tourists to California each year.” — Haney, in a statement, via CBS News

The anticipated tax hike — announced earlier this year by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration — is attached to a 2022 law that removed a blanket cultivation tax but included rules to raise the tax rate if the state’s cannabis revenues start to fall, which they have.

Despite the high taxation, there are still many challenges facing the cannabis market, including strict rules, competitors who do not have licenses, and strict regulations.

Caren W. Woodson, President of the California Cannabis Industry Association stated in a report that “nearly 10 years after Californians approved legalization of cannabis, the industry struggles under the crushing burden of a 15 percent excise duty.” The report states that any increase would be bad policy and devastating for operators.
