The federal government is now preparing to ban the sale of THC-derived hemp in the U.S.
The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies voted on Thursday 9-7 in favor of a federal budget bill that included language prohibiting the sale of THC derived from hemp or cannabinoids similar to it. Marijuana Moment reports.
Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland (R) said that in opening remarks on the bill, it “closes a hemp loophole created by the 2018 Farm Bill, which led to a proliferation intoxicating cannabis products such as Delta-8 and Hemp Flower being sold both online and at gas stations throughout the United States.”
Aaron Smith of the National Cannabis Industry Association stated in the report that this change “would ensure these products were made and sold, giving a major win to drug cartels on the back of public safety and health.”
Congress must empower the federal agencies in order to properly regulate marijuana products. This is a better approach than continuing to implement prohibitionist policies, which are already proving to be a failure in terms of both public perception and practice. — Smith, via Marijuana Moment
Next, the bill will be heard by a full committee.
