Steve’s tale isn’t unique. After a long hiatus, baby boomers are re-discovering cannabis. According to a 2012 study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration comparing trends with 2002, cannabis use among people between the ages 50-54 and 60-64 has almost doubled. The use of pot by boomers aged 55-59 is up more than fourfold. They’re also not just dabbling. The National Institute of Drug Abuse reports that baby boomers are regularly consuming cannabis an average of once a week. These numbers will continue to increase. According to IBISWorld, by the end of 2016, nearly 111 millions Americans aged over 50 would be projected as cannabis users. This figure may increase by another 7 percent in 2020.

Steve: “Get reacquainted” with marijuana.

In fact, many studies show that older boomers prefer to use marijuana medicinally rather than recreationally. This is often done in order for them to cope with issues related age, such as chronic arthritis, depression or pain. Steve even calls his vape pens “the most enjoyable anti-anxiety medicines I’ve ever prescribed.” He only labels cannabis use as recreational when a bad experience is involved.

There are options for those who wish to be pleasantly high without going into hyperspace. Cannabis with THC in the low double-digits – say, the 10-14 percent range – may provide a low-impact way to get a gentle buzz. With the introduction of vape pens, boomers can now return to marijuana with greater ease.

Vape pens allow users to vape easily, with just a single puff.

Steve says about the vape pen, “That is a very classy and sophisticated way of getting high.” Mine even works as a pen. “It’s now my favorite way to get high.”
