NTV reported that cannabis opponents blocked a bill by Sen. John Cavanaugh, a Republican state senator. This means there will not be any protections for doctors who refer patients to Nebraska’s medical marijuana program this year.

Early consideration led to a vote by legislators in favor of the bill. During subsequent discussion, opponents of medical cannabis attempted to alter the intent of the bill.

Cavanaugh pulled out the legislation from consideration with the additional amendments. Cavanaugh noted, “This bill does not serve the goal to make sure that kids have access to medicines.”

Nebraska voters approved the medical cannabis program overwhelmingly in 2024. But the rollout was slow, which disappointed many of the advocates.

Crista Eggers, of Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, told KETV: “If there is no practitioner, then there will be no patients.”

She said that the apparent goal was to ensure Nebraska would never have a working program.

Last week, Nebraska’s legislature approved its first law relating to medical marijuana. This bill will enable the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission set up new fees for industry and increase revenue.
