Currently, 24 U.S. states have legalized adult-use cannabis, and recreational sales are allowed in all but one of them. In the United States, recreational cannabis use is prohibited by federal law. The federal government has also rescheduled cannabis to give the medical cannabis sector a boost.

According to an analysis conducted by the Yale University Budget Lab, if cannabis was legalized and taxed at the federal and state levels in the U.S.A. and all 50 states over the next decade, it would bring in billions.

What would the federal revenue potential be if the federal government made marijuana legal both for medical and adult recreational purposes? This calculation is fraught with uncertainty, but we estimate that federal legalization combined with an excise of $0.00625 for every mg of THC will yield $57.9 Billion over ten years. Budget Lab has written about its analysis.

“A more radical reform would generate $111,3 Billion over the next ten years if both the federal government as well as all other state governments legalized marijuana.” The Budget Lab also added.

The Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) recently published a report highlighting that total tax revenue from legal adult-use cannabis sales alone in the United States has surpassed $28 billion. The first legal transaction for adult-use cannabis took place in Colorado at the beginning 2014, and sales in Washington State started in mid 2014.

The comprehensive report on the legalization of adult-use marijuana in Colorado and Washington since 2014 shows that states have generated more than 28.4 billion dollars in combined tax revenue. new state-by-state report Published by the Marijuana Policy Project. MPP wrote in a press release.

“In just 2025, states that have legalized cannabis for adult use generated more than 4,57 billion dollars in tax revenue. This was the largest amount of revenue ever generated from cannabis sales. In addition, seven states collected more than 200 million dollars in taxes for adult-use marijuana. Three of those states — California, Illinois, and Michigan — generated over $500 million in revenue, one of which (California) collected over $1 billion.” MPP also added.

The legal cannabis industry in the United States currently supports 412,500 full-time jobs, according to the 2026 U.S. Cannabis Jobs Report. The report was created by cannabis industry hiring and staffing platform Vangst in collaboration with global business and economic consulting firm Whitney Economics. According to Whitney Economics, the cannabis industry in the United States will generate revenues of $30 billion by 2026.
