Greece first approved its modernized cannabis medical law in 2017. It wasn’t until 2024, however, that patients suffering from medical cannabis conditions in Greece gained legal access. Specialist doctors in Greece are able to prescribe cannabis as a treatment for multiple sclerosis and chronic pain. The initial medical cannabis prescription can be renewed up to six months after the specialist has reevaluated it.
Researchers affiliated with the University of Athens (U.A.) and the University of Crete (U.C.T.) recently asked doctors in Greece about their attitudes toward medical cannabis. The survey results were published by the Archives of Hellenic Medicine.
183 Greek doctors representing a wide range of specialties completed a survey that asked them about their opinions on the administration of medical cannabis (MC) as well as their interest in finding out more. The surveys were anonymous and completed by doctors voluntarily.
“Total 51.9% of sample were men with an average age of 46.4 years. Most participants thought MC was a legitimate medical treatment and would recommend its use. The majority of participants reported that they did not know enough about MC or were unfamiliar with it. They also said that they needed to be educated more. The researchers discovered.
In summary, statistically significant differences between specialties were not observed. Overall, the participants showed a positive attitude towards MC. They believed in its effectiveness for specific diseases and symptoms. They remained hesitant, however, due to a lack of knowledge and said that they wanted MC to be explained more thoroughly. The researchers concluded.
It is not the first survey of Greek doctors about their opinions on medical marijuana. Researchers affiliated with several Greek universities asked Greek doctors and pharmacists about their opinions on medical cannabis last year. The findings were published by the Journal of Market Access and Health Policy.
According to the survey, Greek doctors and pharmacies believe that more research is needed, that regulatory inconsistencies need to be addressed and that “social stigma” and misinformation are preventing cannabis adoption.
Participants also stressed the urgent necessity for collaboration among policymakers, healthcare professionals, and researchers to establish medical marijuana as a credible treatment option. The survey’s authors wrote.
