There is a rapid growth of the medical research industry. cannabinoid clinical trialsIt is estimated that over fifty companies are currently developing new therapies. A recent report, ‘Cannabinoid Pipeline Insight 2025,’ from DelveInsight Business Research LLP highlights a robust pipeline of more than 55 cannabinoid-based drugs currently in various stages of clinical development. The growing interest of scientists in potential applications for compounds such as cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol, which are used to treat a variety of conditions.

Cannabinoid Clinical Trials Expanding Landscape

DelveInsight reports a dynamic market where companies explore cannabinoids as a treatment for conditions including mental health disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. This pipeline is a collaboration between key players including Zynerba Pharmaceuticals Incannex Healthcare IGC Pharma INC. SciSparc Biopharmaceutical and Innocan Pharma Corporation.

The following therapies are currently being investigated:

  • ZYN-002 (Zynerba Pharmaceuticals): Fragile X Syndrome Phase III Trials
  • IHL-675A (Incannex Healthcare): Under evaluation.
  • IGC-AD1 (IGC Pharma, INC.): Alzheimer’s phase II.
  • SCI-110 (SciSparc): The Phase II is for Alzheimer’s, Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, sleep apnea, and agitation.
  • BRC-002 Biopharmaceutical research company In phase I of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.
  • Cannabidiol Loaded LPT from Innocan Pharma Corporation Epilepsy, pain and other preclinical conditions.

Cannabinoid Research Advances:

A number of companies have reported significant advancements in their research on cannabinoids.

  • MIRA Pharmaceuticals: Mira-55, an proprietary, non-psychotropic cannabis analog, has reported positive preclinical studies. The drug showed pain-relieving effects similar to morphine, but without the local inflammation.
  • InMed Pharmaceuticals: INM-901 has been shown to significantly reduce inflammation in neuroinflammation models ex-vivo, which suggests its potential as a treatment for Alzheimer’s.
  • Corbus Pharmaceuticals Holdings (March 2025): The first subject was dosed in the Phase I study of CRB-913 (a cannabinoid receptor inverse-agonist) for obesity.
  • IGC Pharma, Inc. Named its ongoing Phase II trial for agitation in Alzheimer’s disease ‘CALMA’ (Calming Agitation in Alzheimer’s). IGC Pharma announced in September 2024 data that confirmed IGC-AD1 as a potential disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s. The results showed effects on tau tangles and spatial memory.
  • Biopharmaceutical Company (BRC) – December 2024 BRC-002 was designated as an orphan drug by the US Food and Drug Administration for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

Cannabinoids: Their therapeutic potential and understanding

Cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid systems of our bodies, a network that is involved in controlling pain perception and mood. They also regulate appetite and immune functions. The compounds are either derived directly from the cannabis (phytocannabinoids such as THC and CBD) or produced in the body (endocannabinoids, like anandamide).

CBD has potential therapeutic effects without the psychoactive side-effects of THC. FDA approved CBD for Lennox Gastaut, Dravet syndromes and other rare epilepsy forms. CBD is also associated with anxiety, neurodegenerative disorders, and inflammation. THC is known to relieve chronic pain and nausea caused by chemotherapy, as well as stimulate appetite among HIV/AIDS patients. THC-CBD combinations are being studied for multiple sclerosis, cancer pain and other conditions.

Other cannabinoids, such as CBG and CBN (cannabinol), are currently being researched for the potential they have in treating conditions like insomnia and glaucoma. Synthetic Cannabinoids like FDA approved medications like Dronabinol and Nabilone offer standardised solutions for treating nausea and appetite loss.
