Laura Kelly has battled with the lack of legalised medical marijuana in Kansas, a US state for many years. She still hopes to pull it off.
Cannabis is currently illegal in Kansas, even small amounts are considered misdemeanor crimes. Although there is strong support among voters for medical marijuana, the cries of many legislators go unheard.
The Governor Kelly has signed Senate Bill 28 in 2019. This law provides a positive defense for the possession of cannabidiol products (CBD), which contain tetrahydrocannabinol, but only under special circumstances. Her subsequent exhortations to get medical marijuana legalized haven’t been successful – yet.
Kelly, the Governor, lamented this situation in 2023.
Each day, Kansans must choose between the pain of living and breaking the law. It is an unbearable choice – and an absolutely unnecessary one.”
Two bills relating to medical marijuana have been introduced in the past year. One bill was heard by the Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs on March 20, 2024. However, this died in committee.
The Governor raised this issue in recent comments about allowing Senate Bill 25 to become law, without her signature. Also known as “The Right to Try for Individualized Treatment Act”, SB 250 Individuals with debilitating or rare conditions can access experimental treatments and drugs.
Comment by Her:
The bill will allow Kansans to have a choice in their care. It’s now time to allow medical Marijuana in Kansas. Kansans who suffer from chronic pain and Post Traumatic Trauma Disorder or children with Dravet Syndrome can choose the treatments that best suit their needs.
In the early part of last month, Senators were presented with a medical marijuana bill. Senate Bill 294 Authorizes the cultivation of, processing, distribution and sale, and use, and products derived from medical cannabis. SB 294 was sent to Committee on Federal and State Affairs on the next day.
