Republican lawmakers in Ohio are seeking to make changes to the 2023 cannabis legalization law approved by voters by the end of June, the Ohio Capital Journal reports. The two bills are being considered by lawmakers. If combined, they would limit THC levels, restrict home cultivation, and make many changes in cannabis accessibility.
House Bill 160 This would allow only 350 adult-use cannabis dispensaries in all of the state, reallocate the vast majority of the tax revenue from the sale and use marijuana to the General Revenue Fund, as well as cap the THC level at 70%. Senate Bill 56 The voter-approved legislation would limit the number of plants that adults can grow in their homes from 12 to 6, prohibit the use of cannabis in public, including sharing between adults, as well as eliminate social equity programs and job creation.
The Republicans are still unable to reach an agreement, but House Finance Chairman Brian Stewart who sponsored the House Bill told the Journal, “Generally, we’re trying to find a solution that is more popular.”
House Minority Leader Allison Russo, a Democrat in California said that Democrats “want the vote of the voter to be protected” and ensure that this money is used properly.
In February the Senate passed the bill 23-9, and the House referred the bill to the Judiciary Committee.
