Some cultivars transcend taste, simply because they are that great. The lightning bolt strains have a similar effect on everyone, and are now gaining popularity in IRL networks. Many clones, knock-offs and copies are part of the success of these types of strains. Of course, a lot of awards are also common. One such flower is the Double OG Chem from Rebel Grown. This off-grid grower in Southern Humboldt’s Palo Verde appellation grows it. This mix of OG and Chem Dog is gassy, frosty and very high in THC at 34%. Dan Pomerantz says, “I was passionate about marijuana when I first became interested.” He is also the creator of Double OG Chem and founder of Rebel Grown. Pomerantz started his career in cannabis production by moving from Boston to Vermont and experimenting with indoor and outdoor growing soil, organics, and genetics. Pomerantz says, “I always wanted to achieve and discover something exciting and more unique.”
Pomerantz, who had just arrived in California to start a marijuana farm for the first-time, fell head over heels with the magical, hidden world of the Emerald Triangle. In 2011, Pomerantz was in a perfect position to launch his brand Ganja Rebel Seeds. He claims that it will be the first company to offer seeds at medical dispensaries in Humboldt County.
By the time I founded a seed business, I already had extensive experience within the agricultural industry,” says he. “I could see the problems that face these small-scale growers. The market had changed and the growers couldn’t afford to sell their amazing seeds. Purple trends were over and most people couldn’t get weed to sell if they didn’t own OG Kush.
Pomerantz said he then “showed [up] with a collection of seeds from which I bought, traded, and collected genetics.” I started breeding and everyone kind of laughed at me saying, ‘You realize you’re bringing sand to the beach here?’ Then, they began to grow them.”
Pomerantz created seeds from hard to grow, marketable clones. They grew well in the Emerald Triangle’s rich soil.
Pomerantz, in his first year of living in Humboldt County, worked as a farmhand for a farmer that recognized Pomerantz’s interest and passion for the genetics field. He was given access to a tiny greenhouse. At the end of that year there was a OG Chem. He says, “I had several different females and took clones from the four best.” “I gave them away to all the growers I know.” All of us agreed that #2 Double OG chem was the frostiest and most beautiful plant. I was sure it would be special.”
Kevin Jodrey was at Wonderland Nursery at the time, and it was the only cannabis nursery licensed in the nation. Jodrey started selling tens-of-thousands of clones. This created a new submarket for a very high-testing OG strain at a moment when there was saturating mid-range OGs.
Pomerantz says, “It’s right when people began to care about THC.” The OG clones from California were maxing out at 25, 26, maybe 27 percent if grown aggressively. This was 90 per cent of the OG market in California at the time. The entire menu of every dispensary was filled with OGs.” Pomerantz then announced that he was offering something new: a white, gassy OG with 30% THC. Jodrey sold the clones to thousands of growers.

Pomerantz says, “It created its own niche.” It’s also been known as Twist OG, Kush Dog; there are many other names for it because people don’t always give it credit.
The Emerald Cup is one of the few competitions that do acknowledge credit. Pomerantz explains, “The Double OG Chem hybrid was first created in 2011 when the OG Chem crossed into an OG Sour. It took many years to select it and get it where it is today. It’s the only genetic that has ever won three Breeders Cups. It’s the first time that a plant has held so many of the top two or three places at Emerald Cup. This plant also has won the fourth spot multiple times as well as a number of top ten positions. It’s basically the cannabis flower that has won the Emerald Cup the most since 2016, or 2017. That is incredible.”
Cully and Rachel, Pomerantz’s partners, are in charge of the day-today operations at Rebel Grown.
Pomerantz states, “The awards we receive are for our farmers.” It’s very important for me to praise them. Cully and Rachel have carried on the traditions of the neighborhood and my own approach to growing organically with weeds. Cully and Rachel are the best farmers outside in Humboldt County. Not me.”
Pomerantz attributes the success of Rebel Grown’s award-winning varieties to its meticulous, locally focused growing methods. Their plants have a choice of almost 20 organic amendments to the soil and local microbes. Of course, having a positive mindset is important.
“We strive constantly to continue improving, because we are aware that others also improve,” says he. “And we want them to get better—we don’t see other farmers as competitors; we see them as allies. We want to see small farmers succeed, win and produce the best possible weed. “We know we have to improve as the farmers do.”
