Washington State lawmakers are currently considering a measure that creates a class of cannabis permits for event planners who wish to incorporate cannabis consumption zones.
NBC Right Now reported that House Bill 1933 would give organizers the right to organize up to one event per month, lasting three days, where guests could smoke marijuana legally.
Rep. Melanie Morgan said the main sponsor of the legislation is a safety measure that gives legal marijuana consumers a safe place to use the product other than at home.
The bill strengthens consumers’ protections, as it requires compliance with liquor and cannabis boards regulations to ensure proper labeling. “It inhibits sales and usage of alcohol and tobacco at such events and prohibits their use. Morgan, speaking at a hearing held on the bill in a Senate committee last week, said that it also created economic opportunities for social equity and small business applicants.
This measure will also create a training program to ensure that staffing for such events is done properly.
NBC Right Now reported that the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs opposed the bill, stating it would increase the number of drivers who are impaired by marijuana.
It is now up to the House Committee on Consumer Protection and Business.
