In a recent letter addressed to Meta Platforms, Inc., Facebook’s parent company, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, Inc. (SSDP) led a coalition of marijuana and psychedelic advocates to urge the company not to continue what the group describes as “the disproportionate and ongoing censorship” of content relating to cannabis, psychedelics, or harm reduction.
“Accounts committed to public education, legal and policy advocacy, research dissemination, and harm reduction services — including those of licensed healthcare professionals, nonprofits, and legal businesses — have been routinely shadowbanned, deplatformed, or had their posts removed with little explanation or recourse, despite operating in full compliance with local laws. The suppression of these accounts is more than an inconvenience. It is also a form digital marginalization. — SSDP, in the letter
These groups claim that the continued censorship on cannabis and psychedelics is a result of the increasing number of deaths from overdoses as well as mental health issues. They call upon Meta to end discriminatory banning and to establish clear, consistent, and transparent content policies to distinguish between illegal drug promotion and legitimate drug education.
The letter was signed by 81 groups, including students, educators and researchers as well as entrepreneurs and leaders from the community. They called Meta’s policies “censorship” of scientific, legal and policy discussions, especially those related to public health and law, and described the policy in the letter “not neutral.”
The letter says that “as cultural and legal environments around these issues change, so too must your policy.”
