According to a WGME article, a Maine new law would require that products for medical use be tested the same as products intended for adult consumption.
Maine’s regulations for adult-use marijuana require that all products sold to licensed retailers be tested by the retailer and state officials. The medical cannabis program, however, does not have this requirement. Marc Malon, a state representative (D), sponsored the bill. It was supported by Governor. Janet Mills’ (D) bill would mandate that medical cannabis be tested for heavy metals and pesticides.
Malon stated that “at the end of day we have to ensure the products sold to the consumers are clean”.
Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine released an op-ed in the MMCM trade journal on Wednesday, calling the proposed legislation a “misguided proposal that would harm small business while failing to address actual concerns.”
The MMCM stated that instead of mandatory heavy metal and potency testing, the state would prioritize investigating and preventing illegal grows, setting standards for testing laboratories, preventing harmful pesticides use, and research safety standards for industry.
“Mandatory testing won’t stop the illicit market—it will kill small businesses and reduce patient access to safe, high-quality cannabis. “Governor Mills should stop ignoring the industry stakeholder and work with them to create sensible, science based policies.” — MMCM leadership, in the op-ed
In October last year, the Office of Cannabis Policy issued a product recall for a number of batches of cannabis-based products intended for adult use due to contamination by mold and bacteria.
