Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – Donald Trump’s nominee for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – told a senator group last week that he, if confirmed, would defer the Drug Enforcement Administration on the question of cannabis rescheduling. Marijuana Moment has reported.
Kennedy had previously stated that, while he was a candidate for the presidency, he was in favor of federally legalizing marijuana. But during an appearance before the Senate Finance Committee last week, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) asked Kennedy whether he would “commit to working with the DOJ and DEA to swiftly resume proceedings on the scheduling of marijuana” — he said he would defer to the federal agencies overseeing the hearings.
“I will defer the DOJ’s and DEA’s decisions on their allocation of resources, and their development of priority.” In accordance with applicable law, I will make sure that HHS is available for assistance to those agencies. — Kennedy, in his response
Hearings that were initiated by the Joe Biden government last year have been delayed in January due to legal challenges claiming DEA’s bias against reforms has made it unfit for the job of overseeing the hearings.
Kennedy added that he deferred to state and federal authorities in the area of enforcement of criminal law in relation to cannabis prisoner releases.
