California Governor. Gavin Newsom (D) said on Wednesday that he’s assuming the role of “leader of the free world” in light of the federal government shutdown—and part of his platform will be to legalize marijuana.
He said that the people would be “high in patriotism” on X.
Newsom used the opportunity of Congress’ continued struggle to agree on legislation to fund government to mock President Trump, whom he has regularly irritated with posts on social media that mimicked Trump’s rhetoric in recent weeks.
Good News Patriots! GAVIN C. NEWSOM is now the leader of the free world, he said. He listed legislative priorities including universal health care and employment, as well as free eggs, subsidies for hair gel, and plans to “LEGALIZE CANNABIS!”
Newsom’s X Twitter account echoed Trump’s tweets in all caps, “CRIME WILL STAY LOW and EVERYONE WILL BE HIGH on PATRIOTISM” “AND NO MORE TICKERMASTER FEE (FOR SWIFTIES, KID ROCK FEES WILL STAY!) They will shout USA! USA! WE WILL RETURN AND BE “HOTTER”, THAN ANYTIME BEFORE. “THANK YOU!”
Newsom, a prominent politician at the time, was the first to support legalization in California years before the voters of his state voted for the reform. It’s obvious that the Wednesday post isn’t intended to be taken as serious. It’s a copy of Trump’s brazen social media strategy.
This post was published on the day that the California governor’s law that delayed a tax increase on marijuana for three years took effect.
Trump stated in late august that he will soon make a final decision regarding a plan to transfer marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act to Schedule III. In the past, he had endorsed this reform during the campaign. However, he has been less specific in his recent remarks about the proposal.
However, rescheduling will not result in the legalization of marijuana as California’s governor joked.

While a decision on rescheduling remains pending, Trump did share a post on social media over the weekend that touted the health benefits of hemp-derived CBD, particular for seniors.
One of Trump’s longtime advisors, Roger Stone, subsequently said that his administration has an opportunity to move forward with marijuana rescheduling—or, even broader legalization—in a way that Democrats who regularly tout the reform failed to achieve when they controlled the White House and Congress.
Meanwhile, the Republican Senate sponsor of a bipartisan cannabis banking bill said recently that Trump rescheduling marijuana would be an “important domino” to advance his legislation.
