Marjorie Michel announced that the Canadian Cannabis and Brain Health Consortium would receive a $24-million investment from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The Cannabis and Brain Health Consortium, Canada’s premier national research consortium focusing on cannabis and the brain, will be launched by Minister of Health Marjorie Michel.
This initiative will bring together experts and researchers from all over the country to examine how cannabis impacts brain health throughout the lifespan. It will also establish a coordinated national infrastructure to facilitate data pooling and access across the provinces and territories. This resource can be used by researchers all over Canada for years to come. The Canadian government wrote in an press release Announcing public investments.
Canadian Institutes of Health Research reported that in 2025, more than one-third of Canadian adults would have used cannabis. In a press release, the Canadian government stated that, “While many people use marijuana without experiencing serious negative effects, there are important questions about its impact on brain and mental health at different life stages, especially for youth, pregnant women, frequent users, and people who are at an increased risk of mental harms.”
