The Australian state of Victoria could give voters the chance to vote on a proposal for a non-binding legalization of adult-use cannabis. The Cannabis Legalisation Plebiscite Bill, which will be discussed in the upper chamber this week, asks voters whether they are for legalizing cannabis possession, personal use and home cultivation.
“Legalise Cannabis Victoria” is leading the charge, arguing that it’s high time we cut through the years of inaction by politicians and let the people have the final word. The report stated that Herald Sun Its original coverage. “Under the proposal, the plebiscite would be non-binding — meaning while it wouldn’t force an automatic change to the law, it would send an unmistakeable message to the government about where public opinion truly sits.”
“‘Most Victorians I speak to feel as though the government isn’t responding to what the community wants — that they are out of touch. We can move forward with the community’s wishes by allowing Victorians a chance to voice their opinions through a plebiscite. Legalise Cannabis leader Rachel Payne told the outlet.
David Ettershank introduced the Cannabis Legalisation Plenary Bill at the Victorian parliament. In his address, Mr. Ettershank claimed that the prohibition of cannabis is a failed government policy that has led to significant social harm without doing much to reduce marijuana use. MP Ettershank highlighted the cannabis policy of the Australian Capital Territory. Adults can cultivate and possess up 50 grams cannabis in their own homes.
It will not change the cannabis laws in Victoria if voters approve of this measure. It would however increase pressure on legislators to modernize Victoria’s cannabis policies if a large majority of voters approve the measure.
Slovenia provides an example where the lawmakers followed the will of voters after the voters approved a medical cannabis legalization non-binding measure. It will take time to see if this is the case in Victoria.
