Arizona again loosens restrictions on past marijuana use by police recruits – MEDCAN24

Arizona’s law enforcement board further eased its marijuana restriction for prospective police recruits by reducing the amount of time that applicants must refrain from cannabis consumption before they are eligible for hiring.

According to a final rulemaking notice published in the Arizona State Register late last month, the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board’s (AZPOST) move “reduces the lookback period from two years down to six months for marijuana usage prior to employment.”

There are rules that prohibit police recruits from being hired if they “illegally used or possess marijuana”. This also applies to anyone serving as a Peace Officer who is found illegally in possession or using marijuana.

The board has already reduced the period of look-back from three to two years five years earlier.

As you might imagine, the society has evolved,” said the executive director at that time. We felt that it was important to look into the changing views of society on illegal drug use.

Before the change in law, the applicants would also be automatically turned away if they had used marijuana more than twenty times or more than four time after turning 21. Both of these restrictions are no longer in effect.

The board has clarified in 2019 that officers can use CBD without worrying about losing their job.

Arizona lawmakers passed two bills last month that focused on psychedelic therapies. Senate passes bill to establish advisory board for studying psilocybin science, state and federal policy surrounding the psychedelic. House approves separate measure to fund clinical trial on ibogaine.

Former U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ)—who also championed psychedelics reform while serving in Congress—called on the state legislature to pass the legislation, while pledging to personally raise $5 million in philanthropic donations to support the psychedelic research if it’s is ultimately enacted.
