Tetrahydrocannabinol was the cannabinoid that cannabis patients and consumers have been focusing on for many years. THC is the main cause of the euphoric effect associated with cannabis. Other cannabinoids are becoming more popular with consumers and patients in recent years. This is especially true for cannabidiol.
A team of researchers based in Canada and affiliated with the Université de Montréal recently conducted a study examining how co-administration of CBD and THC impacts the plasma availability of THC and its active metabolite 11-OH-THC. The study’s results were published in the Journal Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews.
Researchers conducted a systematic review of “acute dose-testing studies that administered either a) one fixed dose of THC or b) an identical dose of THC in combination with CBD.” The researchers included results from 14 different trials in their analysis.
“Our results indicate that the co-administration with CBD can significantly raise blood levels of 11OH-THC (the active metabolite THC), an effect which is highly dose dependent. The researchers found.
While it is still unclear how CBD-related increases of THC and 11OH-THC levels will translate into behavioural effects or adverse effects, findings from the metaanalysis show the importance of caution and nuance in recommending high doses CBD combined with THC. Researchers concluded.
A number of previous studies found that CBD and THC combined are effective for treating different health conditions. For example, a team of researchers based in Brazil and affiliated with the Federal University of Paraná reviewed data from multiple research databases “to evaluate the efficacy and safety of cannabinoids for the treatment of MS-related spasticity,” finding that the use of CBD:THC extracts yielded improvements among patients.
In Iran, a separate study was conducted to determine if a sublingual spray that contained CBD and THC could help patients with type 2 diabetics. Researchers determined that CBD:THC sprays improved blood sugar levels and cholesterol in patients.
