Lawmakers in the Florida House Health Professions & Programs Committee last week voted to advance a proposal to waive the annual $75 registration fee for medical cannabis patients who are veterans, Newsweek reports.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Alex Andrade(R), would extend certification for medical cannabis patients from one to two years. Patients would then only need to be recertified half as frequently. Veteran patients would not be charged the $75 registration fee, but would have to pay for the certification of the program.
A prior version of the bill, HB 555, sought to expand the list of conditions that qualify for participation in the program and to allow patients who have out-of state medical cannabis IDs. However, these provisions were removed by the committee before it considered the proposal.
HB 555 has a companion measure in the Senate — SB 552 — but the proposal has not been touched since it was introduced on March 4, the report said.
Over 900,000 patients are registered in the Florida medical cannabis program.
The state constitution amendment on adult use failed to reach 60% voter approval last year. In 2026, advocates plan to try again for legalization. Florida officials fined the campaign $121850 for violating state election laws.
