FOX 59 has reported that a cannabis legalization plan led by Safe and Regulated Indiana (a coalition of Indiana House Republicans) failed to make any progress in this legislative session. After the House Republicans’ rejection in January of a plan to remove marijuana from Schedule I of state law, the failure marks an end to legislative efforts this session to legalize or decriminalize the drug.
Todd Huston said, “There will always be next year” (R). “I don’t believe in doing…policy based upon revenue. “I think that you can have good policy, but you also need to deal with revenue. That’s how I feel on the marijuana issue.”
The Republican governor has a different view. Mike Braun, who said during last year’s debates that legalizing medical cannabis “makes sense”, has shown interest in the reform of medical cannabis. House Minority Phil GiaQuinta said Democrats will continue to pursue medical marijuana legalization in this session.
“We will keep trying. I mean we have an entire second half.” We can also amend the bill if we have an opportunity, because our caucus supports it.” — GiaQuinta, in the report
The report stated that lawmakers did approve one proposal relating to cannabis, which set a THC threshold for determining whether or not a driver was legally impaired.
