New Hampshire’s House of Representatives approved the adult-use cannabis bill for the second consecutive time during this legislative session. On Wednesday, lawmakers voted by a vote of 208 to125 to send the bill on to the Senate.
Last month, House members approved their first bill legalizing cannabis for the year. The second, HB 198 is a more simple policy, which does not set any retailing rules or allow home grows. While the bill would allow adults to possess cannabis, it doesn’t offer legal ways of obtaining cannabis.
Rep. Jared Sullivan, the primary sponsor of the bill, argued it is appropriate for senators to have another option in legalizing cannabis to choose from, since the majority seem to favor ending the prohibition on marijuana in general and establishing a regulated market seems more controversial to many dissenters.
It is 2025. We should stop arresting and ruining lives of people for possessing cannabis. Many states have legalized it for both possession and sale. — Rep. Sullivan, on the House floor
New Hampshire’s Gov. Kelly Ayotte said on her campaign trail that last year she was against legalizing cannabis for adult use.
