The campaign of Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), promoting his pro-marijuana-legalization platform, is asking people to sign an online petition in order to “show just how much support [he] has on this matter.”
The senator’s staff sent out an email on Saturday saying that “John is proud to fight for legal marijuana” amongst other issues like health care reform, labor unions and the Senate.
It says “John Fetterman knows that legalizing weed will increase revenue, create jobs, bring justice and give us more freedom.” He sees the benefits to our veterans, farmers and small business. Most importantly, he believes it is a chance for people to be released from prison who were incarcerated solely because they used marijuana.
While serving as Pennsylvania’s Lieutenant Governor under Gov. Tom Wolf (D), Fetterman, was an outspoken advocate of cannabis reform. He also helped to facilitate clemency on the state level.
After being elected as a senator, his outspokenness has decreased. He still supported proposals for legalization such the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act. Since he entered federal office, in 2023, Fetterman is not the primary sponsor of marijuana reform legislation.
The new email continues to state that “weed was always a central issue in John’s campaigns” and encourages supporters to sign a petition online if they believe “it is time to legalize marijuana at the federal government level.”
Online petitions like these are a great way to create email lists for fundraising.
Most Senators do not make the marijuana issue a priority. But John has never been ‘most Senators,'” the email blast continues. “However—the issue is clear: 89% of Americans support legal weed in one form or another!”
Sign our petition now if you are one of these people! John is one the loudest voices (and to be honest, the tallest ones) for legal marijuana in the Senate. Each signature proves how much support John enjoys on this matter.
Recently, Fetterman gave his opinion on the marijuana policy during an AskAPol interview earlier in this month.
Asked about President Donald Trump’s anti-legalization pick to run the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the senator said “it’s undeniable that the legal weed movement have taken—have lost some steam over the last couple years.”
It’s not controversial for anyone but the extremist fringes, he added. I might be in Senate but we are still stumbling around, and it’s time to make legal marijuana.

While his legislative action on cannabis in the Senate has been largely confined to cosponsorships of certain reform bills—from legalization to industry banking access—he did put pressure on the Biden administration to expand its marijuana pardons to forgive those penalized for possession under military code.
He also stated last year that, despite the fact that it was a question of freedom and individual choices, he would not be supporting then-Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer’s (D) request for an immediate crackdown on Zyn. This is similar to why he supports marijuana legalization.
In 2023, he also argued for reforms in psychedelics, saying that the psilocybin mushroom could be a “revolution in mental health treatments” and an “economic “boon” to his state, Pennsylvania, where he called it the “mushroom capitol of the world.” To date, however, he’s not introduced any legislation that would advance this issue.

Most candidates still shy away from including legal cannabis in their platforms. Even most Democrats! But John isn’t exactly your cookie-cutter Senator, folks…
John stands firm in his beliefs — just the way he always has. He’s proud to be fighting for legal weed ✅, health care access for EVERYONE, LGBTQIA+ protection under law 🌈, the union way of life, raising the minimum wage, beating back climate change, and more.
Today, we’re going to talk about legal marijuana.
John Fetterman knows that the legalization of marijuana will bring more jobs, revenue, freedom, and justice. He understands that it is in the best interest of our small businesses, veterans and farmers.
