Hundreds of supporters of the Texas hemp industry crowded the State Capitol Building on Monday to denounce efforts in the Legislature to heavily restrict — or even ban — hemp-derived THC products, KVUE reports.
Hemp products that contain 0.3% THC and less are now legal in Texas. In the past year, this industry has grown into a multi-billion dollar business supporting thousands of Texas jobs.
Reports said that the majority of the Monday testimony opposed the restrictions.
Bills specifically targeting THC (the primary psychoactive element in cannabis):
- Senate Bill 3 was approved by the Senate in December and seeks to prohibit all THC products.
- House Bill 28, however, would not only allow low-potency drugs but also implement serving sizes restrictions.
Both proposals are designed to tighten restrictions on advertising and increase testing standards. Both bills will allow other hemp-derived cannabis products such as CBD and CBG, according to the report.
Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, a Republican who was elected in 2011, said last year that the ban of hemp-derived THC would be his highest legislative priority for this current session. In a recent poll, 62% of Texas residents favored legalizing adult-use marijuana in the state.
