Everyone, with very few exceptions will deal with acne in their lifetime. Some people may experience mild acne, while others can suffer from severe acne. Over-the-counter acne products that contain benzoyl are also common, as well as prescription topical medications and hormonal treatments.
Cannabidiol is becoming more popular among researchers, as it could be used to treat acne. A recent study by Chulalongkorn University researchers in Thailand focused on CBD’s role in acne treatment. The findings were published by the Journal Cosmetics.
“Acne, a common skin inflammation that has a major impact on quality of living. Standard treatments may cause skin irritation, or even contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance. Cannabidiol has anti-inflammatory properties and regulates sebum, but its solubility is poor and it’s stability is low. This study investigated the physicochemical properties of a CBD-loaded hyaluronic acid–graft-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) nanogel (Hy-CBD).” The authors of the study wrote.
In this non-randomized, open-label study, participants applied gel twice daily for 7 days. Clinical examinations and imaging analyses were used to assess skin tolerance, lesions size, pigmentation, and redness at baseline, Day 2 and Day 7. Hy-CBD gel showed no comedogenic or acnegenic properties. “By Day 7, the size of the inflammatory lesions was reduced by 46 percent, and there were significant improvements in post-inflammatory pigmentation and redness.” Researchers found.
“All participants reported that their acne had been subjectively reduced and expressed satisfaction about the results. These results indicate that Hy-CBD Gel is a promising and safe delivery system for acne. To validate these preliminary results, however, larger randomized-controlled studies are needed. Researchers concluded.
CBD’s potency to treat skin disorders is not restricted to acne. Researchers from India and Australia studied the effectiveness of nanoformulated cannabidiol for treating serious skin conditions. Their findings have been published in the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics.
“Applications to acne, psoriasis or eczema have shown improved patient compliance and effectiveness.” Nano-CBD platforms are a safe and effective way to improve dermatological care, despite clinical and regulatory challenges. The researchers concluded.
According to analysts at Fortune Business Insights“The global acne treatment market was valued at USD 12,19 Billion in 2025”, and is “projected to grow from USD 1280 Billion in 2026 up to USD 19.55 Billion by 2034”.
