Thanks to the seed-to sale tracking system, the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority can now better assess the performance of the state’s Medical Cannabis Program.

Operated by MetrcThe system can track retail marijuana, from the stage of the immature or seed plant to the final product sold to the customer. All medical cannabis processors are now required by law to utilize the system.

In addition to helping CCA protect and regulate the medical marijuana market, the CCA also receives a huge amount of real-time information, which has been recently made public.

The system records:

  • 17,786 plants harvested.
  • In sales, $29 942 138.
  • Transactions totaled 256,432

Metrc has shown the top products.

  • Flower (buds) – 47%
  • Concentrates – 32%
  • Infused edibles – 15%
  • Shake trim – 5%

Trim is the trim that the cultivators take off the buds and shake are the small bits of flower cannabis that collect at the bottoms of containers when they’re handled.

The system provides a real-time, clear view of the medical cannabis in Virginia. said Jamie Patten is the Acting Chief Administrative Officer and Head of CCA. We can track the growth of plants, understand trends in sales, and see what products are most popular. The information we collect helps us prevent illegal products entering the marketplace, protect our patients, and plan for the future.

CCA will improve the public’s access to these data by creating an interactive dashboard. It’s not clear when that will occur.

CCA is also launching a new campaign on safe driving to warn Virginians of the consequences and risks of driving under the influence of cannabis. CCA reports that 17 percent of Virginian drivers admit to driving while high at least a couple times in the last month.

The legal implications of these risky driving behaviors are severe. says the CCA. The first-time offender faces fines, prison time and the loss a driving license.

Virginia has legalized the use of medical cannabis starting July 1, 2020. Adults over 21 can also possess and cultivate cannabis at home beginning July 1, 2021.
