Kentucky Cannabis Proposals Aim for Adult Use – MEDCAN24

The Louisville Courier-Journal reported that Kentucky Democrats, both in the House of Representatives and the Senate, are seeking to reform adult-use marijuana with two proposals. Senate Bill 36, and House Bill 105 would put the question on the ballot for the 2026 general elections.

The ballot initiative, if approved by the voters, would legalize up to an ounce of marijuana and create a regulated market for cannabis products. Cannabis homegrows up to five plant would also be permitted for personal use. These bills were introduced during the first legislative session of the State, just a few weeks after medical cannabis was legalized in New York on January 1.

David Yates, the sponsor of this bill (D), believes that legalizing cannabis for adult use would make it safer. He also thinks there would be more benefits to society from a fiscal perspective. The ballot initiative, however, is something he believes could appeal to their colleagues.

The cover is also there for those politicians who need it. The politicians can say they won’t make a final decision. [the bills]”I think it may help us move faster if they let their constituents decide.” — Yates, via the Courier-Journal

In November last year, voters in Kentucky considered initiatives that would allow for local medical marijuana operations. Each initiative was passed with overwhelming voter support.
